The Shakespeare is one of Sheffield’s last remaining original coaching inns, built and opened around the 1830s to serve the former industrial heart of the city. It is located a couple of minutes from the city centre, in the real ale hub of Kelham Island. The Shakespeare is a traditional inn, full of original features and character, serving quality products with a friendly and informal atmosphere. We are child and pet friendly.
We have a large function room that is available to hire. It has hosted a diverse variety of music from folk, world, jazz, rock, blues, indie and dance. We have accommodated both local, national and international acts including: Spectrum, Silver Apples, the Warlocks, Acid Mothers Temple, the Telescopes, the Long Blondes, Bob Log III, Alasdair Roberts, Jack Rose, James Yorkston, Mr David Viner, Rothko, Maps and Atlases and members of the Brianjonestown Massacre, Spiritualised and The Men They Couldn’t Hang.
We have a large and enclosed planted beer garden (which is a proper sun-trap in the warm summer months), a pool table (priced at a more-than-reasonable 50p a game) and are one of the few pubs that still feature a dartboard. A range of board games are also available, including Connect 4 and draughts.
The Shakespeare regularly displays artwork and exhibitions. We have various spaces across the venue that can be utilised in differing ways from outdoor sculpture work to indoor photographic shows. We have also hosted spoken word and poetry recitals.
The Shakespeare was nominated in the Exposed Awards for Best Traditional Pub in 2007 and 2008.
